The largest investment in new and affordable housing in DC history

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s agreement with the Washington Commanders reflects her broader vision of leveraging large-scale projects to address affordable housing needs in the District of Columbia. Her plan isn’t for billionaire sports franchises.  It’s for all of us.

The Mayor’s proposal would lead to the single largest investment in new and affordable housing in the city’s history.  All told, it includes constructing 5,000 to 6,000 new homes, with at least 30% designated as affordable housing, alongside a new stadium for the Washington Commanders and other mixed-use developments.  That’s up to 1,800 new affordable units, a major step towards solving the District’s affordability crisis.

But it won’t happen unless the D.C. Council approves the Mayor’s plan.
